Your Right to Seek Medical Treatment in Other EU Countries

If you are covered by the social security system of an EU/EEA country, you are entitled to seek medical treatment in other EU/EEA countries.

Seeking treatment means traveling to another EU/EEA country with the express purpose of obtaining medical treatment.

If you are traveling around the EU/EEA and suddenly become ill or get in an accident and require urgent care, consult the information on obtaining treatment with the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) instead.

When you seek treatment in another EU/EEA country, you should find a suitable place for treatment yourself and make sure that you can get the treatment there. You can seek treatment with or without prior authorization.

Seeking treatment with prior authorization is more affordable but there are certain requirements for such authorization being given.

You can also seek treatment without prior authorization, in which case you will pay the full costs of the treatment yourself and later be reimbursed according to the rules of your home country.
