Private Travel Insurance

Do you need private health insurance when travelling in the EU?

If you are entitled to the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you can get medically necessary treatment during your temporary stays in other EU countries.

The EHIC card is provided by your home country and is free of charge.

Private health insurance is useful in some circumstances as it can provide additional benefits.

When traveling abroad, private travel insurance can provide valuable protection beyond what public healthcare systems cover. It typically also covers repatriation costs if needed (those are not covered by EHIC).

Additionally, private travel insurance often includes coverage for trip cancellations, lost luggage, and other travel disruptions.

While not mandatory for EU citizens inside the EU, private travel insurance may offer additional peace of mind and financial security, ensuring you are well-protected during your trip.
